Is it always possible to distinguish between live and recorded sound? Do our hearts respond more boldly to visual or aural input? Virtual reality and our relationship to technology pervade the innovative chamber works of composer Michel van der Aa. For the U.S. premiere of Up-close, which won the 2013 Grawemeyer Award, cellist Kaori Yamagami performs an intimate concerto accompanied by film in a profound exploration of identity, memory, and loss.
The work Up-close is performed by special arrangement with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
