More than twenty-five years ago, John Malkovich soared to international stardom with his memorable performance of Vicomte de Valmont in Stephen Frears’s Academy Award–winning film Dangerous Liaisons. Now, Malkovich steps into the role of director with his modern interpretation of this famous story, based on Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’s 1782 novel that centers around the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont, a pair of restless and seemingly amoral aristocrats who form an unholy alliance and turn seduction into a game—one they play with wit and style, and diabolically well. This updated script by Christopher Hampton deftly translates the original source material into the world of today—among other details, love letters become text messages and emails—making the seductive power of this perverse conflict irresistibly new.
