Jan. 17 at 7:30
The Andrew Cyrille 21st Century Big Band Unlimited is a 12-piece ensemble showcasing its leader’s talents as a composer and percussionist. Brooklyn native Andrew Cyrille is perhaps the preeminent free jazz percussionist of the past three decades. Having studied with Miles Davis Quintet drummer musician, Philly Joe Jones, and studying percussion and composition at the Juilliard and the Hartnett Schools of Music, in time, Cyrille’s compositions evolved with his own sounds in the bebop and avant-garde settings.
His introduction to and association with the unique avant-garde jazz pianist, Cecil Taylor in the mid-1960s brought him new acclaim and established him in the vanguard of jazz drumming. In addition, he has collaborated with a number of famed avant-garde, and bebop artists such as Mary Lou Williams, Oliver Lake, Jimmy Giuffre, Coleman Hawkins, Muhal Richard Abrams, David Murray and others.. The 21st Century Big Band Unlimited includes three trumpets, two trombones, french horn, four saxophones, bass, and Andrew on drumset.. The project has been arranged by Mark Masters, President of the American Jazz Institute. This new ensemble allows Andrew Cyrille total freedom of expression where he can remake his compositions in a new and expanded tonal setting. The results are extraordinary.
