Bill Charlap: The Cool School
Birth of the Cool Festival

As he did on a memorable JALC concert in 2006, pianist Bill Charlap, joined by a hot nonet, presents a stylistic, erudite view on the “cool” school of jazz. Among other things, they’ll find approaches to iconic songs that Lester Young and Chet Baker famously rendered with their singularly relaxed brand of swing, and various offerings from John Lewis and Gerry Mulligan (Charlap worked for him from 1988 to 1990) that refract, with tuneful elegance, the advanced harmonic concepts and virtuosic execution of bebop. Featuring saxophonist Frank Wess, vocalist Mary Stallings, guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, vibraphonist Steve Nelson, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Kenny Washington, along with trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, saxophonist Gary Smulyan, trombonist Jason Jackson, Bob Stewart (tuba), and Jeff Scott (French horn).
